Description:

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth. A fascinating collection of recordings by the famous Dutch violinist15-CD Box SetThe Dutch violinist Hermann Krebers (1923-2018) celebrates his 100th birthday in 2023. This 15-CD box set is the most comprehensive collection of Clevers' recordings as soloist, chamber musician, and concertmaster to date. Limited edition. Newly remastered. For a long time, Hermann Krebers' concertos were the cornerstone of the Philips LP catalog. The critical acclaim and popularity given to those recordings is remarkable in itself, given that he did not pursue a career as an international soloist. Rather, Clevers chose to become the orchestra's concertmaster, putting his family first. First he became concertmaster of the Hague Residential Orchestra under Willem Van Otterloo, with whom he made the first recordings of Bach, Beethoven, and Wuertang in the early 1950s.Around this time, with his student and lifelong friend Theo Orloff, he also recorded Bartók's Duet and Bach and Henk Bardings' Concerto for Two Violins, both world premieres on CD. In 1962, Clevers became principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Bernard Haitink, and with his famous second recording of the Beethoven and Brahms concertos, he became the "Concertmaster "Concertmaster" also recorded Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" and R. Strauss' "Life of a Hero," a steep mountain of repertoire for the "Concertmaster," along with long and outstanding solo violin parts recorded with Eugen Jochum and Leonard Bernstein in the 1970s. Also included are "Benedictus" from Beethoven's "Missa solemnis" and "O God, have mercy" from Bach's "Matthew Passion" with Jochum. Krebers brought a soloistic sophistication and character to these parts that played a central role in the overall success of the performance. As a chamber musician, he also participates in Mozart's oboe quartet with Heinz Holliger. More unusually, there is a Bach double concerto with Arthur Grumiaux, recorded in Switzerland, and a Brahms double concerto with Tibor de Mahula, long-time principal cellist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. More than 40 years have passed since his untimely retirement following a maritime accident, but the aristocratic elegance and golden warmth of Clevers' playing has retained its appeal. Original jacket specification. Includes a foreword written by Bernard Haitink shortly before his death. The liner notes by Dutch author Niek Nerissen offer valuable behind-the-scenes insights into many of these recordings. Rare photographs from the collections of Philips and the Concertgebouw are also included. Universal Music/IMS
