biglongsun, an eight-piece band from Brighton, blends DIY spirit with classic songwriting. Their latest release shines with a warm lo-fi vibe and a whimsical pop sensibility. “lovesongsandspiritualrecollections” is the third album from biglongsun, an eight-piece band from Brighton, UK. Born from an astonishing creative pace—completing their third album in just over 18 months—this work blends classic songwriting with a lo-fi sound brimming with DIY spirit, resulting in a warm yet strangely captivating album. Band leader Jamie Broughton recorded and mixed nearly the entire album in his bedroom studio, using almost exclusively a Tascam 244 cassette recorder. Amid a nostalgic texture that seems to bring lost 70s masterpieces back to life, the album is packed with delicate melodies reminiscent of Neil Young, Emitt Rhodes, and Alex G, along with the band’s unique sense of humor. Spanning folk, psychedelic pop, and indie rock, the tracks create a one-of-a-kind sonic world where approachable songwriting and unpredictable arrangements coexist. In the lead single “heavy (on your mind),” catchy melodies, a warm analog feel, and the poignant sound of the lap steel guitar symbolize biglongsun’s unique charm—at once nostalgic yet fresh. With a sense of playfulness reminiscent of of Montreal and The Kinks, and the free spirit of DIY pop, this is a masterpiece garnering attention in the contemporary indie scene.
