Master Conductor James Levine & the Boston Symphony Orchestra Take the Stage! Wollinen’s Symphony No. 8 & Piano Concerto No. 4! Levine, who succeeded Seiji Ozawa as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2004, was particularly active in performing and promoting contemporary music, premiering a total of 12 works worldwide before stepping down from that position in 2011. This album features two major works composed about ten years ago by Wolinin, a leading figure on the American East Coast. Wolinin is a native of New York. His compositions are based on the theory of pitch-class sets, a concept within the 12-tone technique that has evolved uniquely in the United States. Symphony No. 8 is captivating for its crystal-clear lyricism, which occasionally shines through the austere atmosphere characteristic of atonal music. The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s superb ensemble playing, along with the individual musicians’ virtuosity and masterful artistry, are highlights of this performance. The Piano Concerto, featuring Peter Zerkin—who was a close friend of Toru Takemitsu—as soloist, is a marvel, showcasing Zerkin’s razor-sharp virtuosity in his mature years, a far cry from the austere simplicity often associated with him. Both works were recorded over several days at Boston Symphony Hall during meticulously planned sessions. A must-listen release in the contemporary music category for the second half of 2016.
