Description:

Antonello Manacorda and the Kammerakademie Potsdam present the complete recording of Schubert's complete symphonies for Sony Classical. The album first includes Schubert's Symphony No. 1, composed as a commemoration of his graduation from a Viennese seminary at the age of 16 and premiered by the school's orchestra. Also included is the Andante movement from a three-movement sketch begun in Schubert's final years, with a supplemental completion by Brian Newbold. It is an impressive work with a fantastic world that begins with a mystical feeling. The Kammerakademie Potsdam is a chamber orchestra with modern instruments based in the Berlin suburb of Potsdam, but it has attracted much attention for its period instrument technique and the use of ancient instruments for brass and timpani, and for its vital performances.Especially since the arrival of Antonello Manacorda, the current principal conductor, in 2010 and his recording of the complete Schubert cycle for Sony Classical, this recording has suddenly gained a lot of attention. The subtleties of Schubert's works are vividly and precisely rendered by this duo, and the melancholy of the slow movements is also very appealing. Conductor Antonello Manacorda was born in Turin, studied violin with Hermann Krebser and Franco Grilli, and founded the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Claudio Abbado, serving as its concertmaster for eight years. He studied conducting under the renowned teacher Jorma Panula and is now a highly acclaimed conductor in orchestras and opera houses in Italy and Germany, and has been the principal conductor of the Kammerakademie Potsdam since 2010 and of the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra in the Netherlands since 2011.
