The “King of Tenors” of the 21st century passionately sings the “songs” of a golden age of love and pleasure. Jonas Kaufmann, a superstar tenor now in high demand around the world for his dark, romantic, and powerful voice. This video captures Kaufmann’s recital, recorded to coincide with his latest album—his third since signing with Sony Classical. The program features a collection of operettas and popular songs from the golden age that swept across Europe, particularly Germany, during the decade from 1925 to 1935. The operettas composed by Lehár and Kálmán, which took Berlin and Vienna by storm in the early 20th century, consisted of songs and dances with beautiful, accessible melodies and can be considered the prototypes of the musicals that were introduced to the United States and developed there from the mid-20th century onward. In addition, numerous talkie films featuring songs and music were produced, some of which became massive hits. These operettas and hit songs, performed by popular tenors of the time such as Richard Tauber, Josef Schmidt, and Jan Kypra—reflected the glamorous and nostalgic atmosphere of Germany’s golden age, a period of great musical and cultural prosperity that lasted until just before the outbreak of World War II. It is for this same reason that the album includes the most famous aria from Korngold’s opera *The City of the Dead*—*“O Happy Fate That Remains with Me”*—which has recently been staged repeatedly in Japan as well. This album is Kaufmann’s homage to that golden age of the early 20th century, when culture and the arts reached their peak, and his flexible, spirited, and passionate singing is a must-hear. The concept for this album came to Kaufmann during a gala concert at the Waldbühne in Berlin in August 2011, where he performed alongside Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott. Since then, he spent three years researching the works and finally managed to record the album in 2014. He was particularly committed to performing the pieces exactly as the composers originally intended, rather than using later arrangements.
