The album was produced by Alison Russell herself and the producer unit dim star (JT Nero and Drew Lindsey) and recorded in December 2022 at Henson Recording Studios in LA. Guests on the album include Rainbow Corporation, a band of only female musicians led by Alison Russell, as well as Wendy & Lisa, Brandi Carlisle, Brandi Clark, Hoosier, and others. Commenting on the new album, Alison Russell said, "The new album is a great success, both sonically and poetically. My goal with The Returner, sonically, poetically, and spiritually, was to create a real-time union of body, mind, and soul. The album is more about rhythm, groove, and syncopation. Grooves that bring the self back to the body, grooves that celebrate sensual and sexual acts and blooms, grooves that serve as an urgent call to action and political activism. In a word, it could be described as "funky."But like the history of all things funky, it is never just a party. It's a multiplicity of energies, blending festivities and battle cries." Alison Russell has had a successful career with several bands, including Po Girls, Our Native Daughters, and Birds of Chicago. The talented multi-instrumentalist has built her career backing numerous artists and will release her debut solo album, Outside Child, in 2021. The album "Outside Child" was nominated for four Grammy Awards and received three nominations and a Best Album Award at the 2022 Americana Awards. It won two International Folk Music Awards, was nominated for the 2022 Juno Award for "Songwriter of the Year" and won the award for "Contemporary Roots Album of the Year" at the same awards.Allison curated "Once And Future Sounds: Roots and Revolution" at the 2021 Newport Folk Festival. She raised over $550,000 at this year's "Love Rising" charity concert in support of LGBTQIA+ in Nashville, and has done social work on anti-trans and anti-drag laws in Tennessee.
