The latest video of the 2017 Waldbühne, the annual open-air concert of the Berliner Philharmoniker on July 1, 2017, is now available. The concert was conducted by Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who is one of the most promising conductors in the world today. This will be his third Waldbühne concert. The theme of the concert under Dudamel's direction was "The Legend of the Rhine. The program features Schumann and Wagner, two leading composers of the German Romantic period. Schumann's Symphony No. 3 is based on the theme of the Rhine, the spiritual home of the German people, known as the Father Rhine. Wagner's "Nibelung's Ring" is also about the gold in the bed of the Rhine. Both pieces feature horns, and the guest players include Eric Terwilliger, principal of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, as well as Sarah Willis, Stefan Jegelski, Georg Schreckenberger, and Paolo Mendes, all of whom are members of the Berliner Philharmoniker.Dudamel's versatile and diverse talents were on full display throughout the performance, and the audience could sense his good chemistry with the Berliner Philharmoniker. For encores, Dudamel performed "The Death of Isolde", "Lohengrin" Prelude to Act III, and Linke's "The Winds of Berlin", which was a great success. Especially during the customary "Winds of Berlin," Dudamel played the violin for concertmaster Daniel Stavrava, and Stavrava took the podium for a surprise performance that sent the 20,000 audience members into a frenzy that made them forget about the inclement weather.
