A collection of nearly five hours of footage of the charismatic conductor Serge Celibidacke (1912-1996), who served as Music Director of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1996. This Blu-ray release contains a collection of his last years with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra from 1988 to 1994. The program includes the Tchaikovsky and Schumann piano concertos with Barenboim as soloist, Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World," one of Celibidacke's core repertoire, and rehearsal footage that explodes in the Celibidacke style, known for its rigorous rehearsals. Prokofiev's "Classical Symphony. The two works by Ravel and Debussy are performed in the most exquisite and rich sound. Celibidacke was appointed principal conductor of the Munich Philharmonic in 1979 after a distinguished career with Italian and Scandinavian orchestras and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, and until his death in 1996, he gave many masterful performances of classical, romantic, and modern works, marking an era in the orchestra's history.Known for his uncompromising rehearsals and solemn tempi, as well as his stubborn refusal to record his performances, Celibidacke is one of the most impressive and charismatic conductors of the 20th century.
