Re-recorded Gardiner's latest recording of the Matthew Passion in 2016! The best live recording of the concert tour that concluded with a fully-fledged concert tour! Gardiner has re-recorded the "Matthew Passion". The first recording with Alkhieff was made in 1989, and it has been passed down through the generations as a monumental masterpiece of ancient instrumental music. This is the first recording in about 30 years and marks a new page in the history of the "Matthew Passion" performance. Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir, and the English Baroque Soloists toured the "Matthew Passion" 16 times over a six-month period beginning in Valencia in March 2016. This recording is from a live performance at the Anima Mundi Festival, the conclusion of that tour. The performance was held in the Pisa Cathedral, a representative building of Pisa Romanesque architecture, and is filled with rich reverberations that seem to descend from the heavens. Gardiner wrote rehearsal notes for the tour, which are included in the booklet of the album, beginning with the tour rehearsals that began on February 5, 2016, and spanning several months, and are very interesting. It is a very interesting account.The English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir are flawless in creating the music Gardiner sought, and the soloists sing to a high standard, all of which bring the music to life. The beautiful voice and charisma of James Gilchrist as the Evangelist further propel the music. The nine soloists sang not only the arias but also the chorus parts, and the young lineup, though mainly young, gave a refreshing performance. Gardiner said that rather than aiming for a special approach, the performance of the "Matthew Passion" requires a solid reading of the music from Bach's score and the maximum use of imagination in the midst of Bach's passion.
