Martha Argerich is second to none when it comes to discovering young talent. The artist she has recently been championing is none other than Gabriel Baldocchi! That said, at 33, he is already an accomplished master who has earned widespread acclaim as a pianist, conductor, and educator—and he possesses the power to fully absorb and reflect Argente’s intense aura. He has already released several CDs; a complete set of Beethoven and Liszt symphonies is scheduled for release on the DYNAMIC label, and a collection of works by Nino Rota has been released on the ARTS label. He began taking piano lessons at the age of six, but he says he was so deeply moved by Martha Argerich’s playing that he “fell in love” the moment he heard her perform. When Argerich—whom he had long admired—listened to his performance of Chopin’s Ballade, he must have felt as if he were on cloud nine. Impressed by his talent, Argerich invited him to join her project, leading to their first performance of a four-hand piece in Argentina and Lugano. For this album, Argerich and Bardotti selected works by five composers: Mozart, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Milhaud, and Ravel. The Mozart piece is K. 448, a masterpiece with a devoted fan base that gained fame through an anime. While the two characters—who were already well-developed in the anime—performed harmoniously together in the series, here you can enjoy an even more passionate rendition of Mozart. The Shostakovich piece, with its intense, battle-like development, is truly nail-biting. Rachmaninoff and Ravel are exactly the kind of repertoire Argerich excels at. It’s a performance where the surging emotions, intense passion, and flying sweat seem to come to life before your eyes. The lighthearted interplay in Milhaud’s *Scaramouche* is also truly impressive.
