Today, the name Kalinnikov refers to Varissy Kalinnikov, the composer of two well-known symphonies who died young, but his brother was also a composer. During his lifetime, his brother Viktor was more successful in a secular sense, composing many religious works for chorus that are rarely performed today. The solemn sound of "Evening Prayer," which seems to spring from the Russian earth, is impressive. Schnittke's three chants, known for their diversity of expressionism, are devoid of any of the eccentric contemporary musical elements of his symphonies and chamber music. They are full of beautiful melodies and chords that could easily be mistaken for Kalinnikov or Rachmaninoff, and are well worth listening to. A must-listen for choral music fans. Tobu Shoji Co.
