Description:
This album commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Johann Heinrich Rolle (1716–1785), a Baroque-era composer well known in Germany, and features a recording of the world premiere of his “St. Matthew Passion.” It follows essentially the same structure as Bach’s work—with the evangelists singing from Luther’s translation of the Gospel of Matthew, while soloists perform arias with newly composed lyrics—but the biblical passages quoted differ, and and it is interesting to note that Lohr begins the narrative with “The Denial of Peter.” A lively performance by the Cologne Academy, conducted by Michael Alexander Wilenz.
