SACD Hybrid Edition of Brett Dean, Gubaidulina, and Wagner's works on "Angels". Beginning with Brett Dean's (1961-) "Voices of the Angels," this album is composed mainly of works related to "angels," including Gubaidulina and Wagner's song "Angels" and works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, and Schnittke. Dean is also known as a virtuoso viola player and was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 14 years, but in recent years he has been focusing on composing. Voices of Angels" is a two-movement work that was premiered in 1996 by the renowned British pianist Imogen Cooper and the musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic, including Dean. The composition was inspired by the first poem of a series of poems, "Duino's Dirge," by Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926). Written for piano quintet, the same performance form as Schubert's "Trout," it is full of surprisingly varied expression.Performed by the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble, formed by pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips, renowned for his duo with Lawrence Power, and the principal players of Swedish and other European orchestras, Andrej Power on violin, Lawrence Power on viola, and Christiane Stotin on mezzo-soprano.
