Tchaikovsky's "Symphonie Pathetique" is usually performed with the thick and stately sound of Russian music. Dausgaard performed it for the first time with a 38-member chamber orchestra. This is Dausgaard's second Tchaikovsky symphony, following the much-talked-about Symphony No. 2 (BIS SA 1829), and the contents are truly eye-opening. Most surprising is its lightness and freshness. Not only does it sound like ballet music, reminding us again that "Pathetique" is a contemporary of "The Nutcracker," but even that intimidating third movement march is reminiscent of a ballet setting. Dausgaard's conducting was not sticky at all, but so light and even that Tchaikovsky's music seemed to sound like Mendelssohn's. It is a series of surprising discoveries, and a must-listen for those interested in "Pathetique".This is an awesome new record that will completely change the image of this masterpiece.
