HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER, a Nashville project with songwriter M.C. TAYLOR, has built a following with a sound that crosses gospel, southern soul, and indie-folk, and has been working with MERGE on a body of work that has updated post-alterna-country The band has been updating Americana since the days of alt-country. Following 2019's TERMS OF SURRENDER, the 2021 album is a personal piece with TAYLOR himself serving as songwriter, arranger, and producer.Created in the vein of his 2019 album being nominated for a Grammy in the BEST AMERICANA ALBUM category, the work is a reflection on themes of growth, alienation, responsibility, family, class, and rebirth, as he says, for himself. The recording session was also attended by GRIFFIN GOLDSMITH and TAYLOR GOLDSMITH of DAWES, ZACH WILLIAMS of THE LONE BELLOW, Nashville guitarist BUDDY MILLER, and JOSH KAUFMAN of BONNY LIGHT HORSEMAN, among others, and was an intimate and energetic experience. also participate in the project, which combines intimacy and ensemble depth. The Great Mystifier," with its gentle bass piano and country-tinged beat supporting TAYLOR's voice; "Mighty Dollar," a song about economic and faith struggles that moves between the folk/rock range; "It," with its minimal R&B groove that creates a quiet uplift; "Painting Houses," co-written with GREGORY ALAN ISAKOV, with its smoky mood; and "It," a gospel-tinged song that has a gospel feel. WILL IF WE LET IT," "PAINTING HOUSES," co-written with GREGORY ALAN ISAKOV, which spreads a smoky mood, and "SANCTUARY," which incorporates gospel elements. The composition gradually builds up a sense of quiet empathy and hope through the context of southern soul, folk, and blues.This is an album that places more emphasis on the detailed ensemble and the space between the lines of the lyrics than on the showiness of the music, and is an album that will be close to the emotions of each listener. It is a carefully written work of Americana that will make you want to quietly reconsider your own feet and your relationship to the world around you in the midst of these noisy times.
