This is English drummer Sebastian Rockford's first ECM release as a duo with pianist/organist Kit Downes. Seb is one of 10 brothers and sisters, wrote most of the songs soon after Gerald's death, and together with pianist Kit Downes, he delivers this group of songs with deep emotion and hymn-like clarity. The final poignant song, "Even Now I Think Of Her," was written by Gerald Rockford and Sebastian explains. Sebastian explains, "My father sang this song into his cell phone and sent it to me. I forwarded it to Kit. He listened to it, and that's how we started. Rockford recalls that after his father passed away, "Every day, sometimes even when I was awake, it was like music was coming into me and singing.At first I was conflicted about writing and didn't want to write, but as I wrote, I felt comfortable and also began to feel what I was feeling in my body. So, in a musical sense, this became my diary." But the album is filled with striking melodies and themes and poignant chord progressions, with many nuances and different tones and colors spread over a simple grand piano and a minimal drum kit.
