My Soft Machine is a very personal account of Parks' experiences and growth in his twenties. He says, "The biggest events we've gone through-trauma, upbringing, vulnerability, etc.-are scattered across the world and our vision like snowflakes. This record is also a portrait, through my lens and body, of a life trapped in this special body, including mid-twenties anxiety, substance abuse by friends around me, my first love, PTSD/sadness/self-destruction/joy handling, running around the world with wonder and sensitivity, etc. Joanna Hogg's film, "The Souvenir" is taken from the film Souvenir. The film is a semi-autobiographical film by A24 and stars Tilda Swinton. It follows a young film student who falls in love with an older, charismatic man and is drawn into his addiction.In an early scene he explains, 'We don't want to see life played out. We want to see the life we experience in this soft machine. From here, the title of the album became 'My Soft Machine'" (Arlo Parks). My Soft Machine was nominated for two of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, including four major categories (Best New Artist, Best Alternative Music Album), and won the Brit Award for Best New Artist, the Mercury Prize, and the BBC's This follows Arlo Parks' debut album, "Collapsed in Sunbeams," which won the Brit Award for Best New Artist, the Mercury Prize, and the BBC's Introducing Artist Of The Year Award.
