Gryaznov, the Genius Arranger and Pianist What Happened to Porgy and Bess? Rhapsody in Black! What became of Porgy after Bess left? Vyacheslav Gryaznov, an outstanding pianist and arranger deeply captivated by Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, set out to answer this question by creating a new work based on the opera’s themes. In his concerto for piano and orchestra, Rhapsody in Black, he picks up the story where the opera’s conclusion left off. Bess heads to New York, and Porgy follows in her footsteps. This work is neither a pastiche nor a mere arrangement; by fusing thrilling improvisation, big-band sounds, and poetic ballads, it breathes new life into Gershwin’s legacy. This musical fresco depicting New York, Rhapsody in Black, pairs with Rhapsody in Blue to form a pair of paintings. Wayne Marshall, a noted interpreter of Gershwin, masterfully conducts the orchestra. Gryaznov has won prizes at competitions around the world, including 6th place in the piano category at the 3rd Sendai International Music Competition. More recently, he launched a virtual orchestra called GPhil and has been creating what might be described as “karaoke versions” of piano concertos. APARTE
