Five years after “HonestLabor,” their long-awaited new album, “QuietStorm,” is finally here! Featuring guest artists such as Axel Fagno, Alto Aria, Dewen, Klein, RXK Nefue, Tony Njok, Chiara Ogawa, and Kelly Moran! SpaceAfrika is a duo consisting of Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang, based in Manchester and Berlin. Since their 2023 release A Grisaille Wedding, they’ve only released the singles <3Less and SIXTEEN in 2024, making this their first album in three years. Their highly experimental debut album, Somewhere Decent to Live (2018), instantly established them as key artists on the scene. A fuzzy, indistinct kick drum. The weight of that kick drum, combined with a dark, industrial, and highly experimental sound—one that clearly draws influence from the music of ModernLove legend Andy Stott and the MORD label run by BASMOOY—earned them a devoted following among electronic music enthusiasts. However, this new release, Quiet Storm, marks a complete departure from his previous style, emerging as a modern classical work featuring piano and violin that sound almost like a film score, along with beautiful yet unsettling vocals. If his previous work could be described as raw and electronic, this album is cloaked in sophistication with an extremely acoustic touch. Listening to this album reveals the breadth of SpaceAfrika’s artistry and the joy of experiencing music through a new approach. Overcoming the pressure that came with the success of “HonestLabor,” they have created an innovative experimental music album that celebrates the art of Black artists and confronts their identity.
