Description:

This original 1969 recording, which masterfully captures the musical worlds of Takemitsu and Messiaen—East and West—is now paired with a meticulously performed Bartók recording. Newly remastered from the original analog master tape in Japan This Takemitsu recording was the world’s first recording, made just one month after the New York premiere on November 7, 1967, by Seiji Ozawa and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, which was made just one month after its world premiere in New York on November 7, 1967. It was recorded live in Amsterdam in December 1967, two years later, during a concert held in the presence of Toru Takemitsu himself. This recording marks the first time “November Steps” was recorded by a non-Japanese conductor, and it generated significant buzz when the Japanese LP was released in 1970. The shakuhachi and biwa are performed by Katsuya Yokoyama and and Nishiki Tsuruta—both indispensable to the performance of this work. Combined with the fact that it was released on the Philips label, which had a well-established reputation for recording quality at the time, and featured the world-renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra, this recording can be said to have been one of the catalysts for the widespread global recognition of “November Steps.” Even today, aside from Ozawa’s re-recording (1991) and several recordings by Japanese conductors, this Haitink recording holds the top spot. The original coupling, Messiaen’s *Thus I Await the Resurrection of the Dead*, was commissioned by André Malraux, then French Minister of Culture, and composed in 1964; this piece was also recorded live in February of that same year. In addition to these, this reissue includes Bartók’s “Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta,” recorded in 1968. This recording was originally released in 1970 as part of a double album paired with Kodály’s “János Hárri” Suite (also being released simultaneously as PROC2240). This new release brings together three pieces recorded around the same time on a single disc. The orchestra’s sound at that time was exceptional, and the delicate timbres essential to Takemitsu’s works are beautifully captured in this superb recording. Building on the already high-quality source material, this reissue features a fresh digitization at 192 kHz/24-bit directly from the original analog master tapes in Hungary. Furthermore, the original jacket design has been retained. The booklet includes a new general introduction and previously published liner notes. Note that this “Vintage+plus Special Edition” series will feature a total of five titles.
