Vienna around 1900. The music of the time was filled with profound sounds influenced by Wagner, and the "Vienna Secession" led by Klimt swept the art world, flooding the world with "late Romantic" works. Schoenberg had not yet reached the world of twelve-tone music, and even in his great work "Glee Song," premiered in 1913, the overall sound is very romantic, derived from Wagner and Mahler, although there are some budding avant-garde sounds in the latter half of the work. The subject of this piece is a poem from the Danish poet Jacobsen's "The Flowering of the Cactus," which is based on a medieval Danish legend. It colorfully describes the outcome of a love triangle between a king, his jealous wife, and his beloved. Usually performed in cantata form, this performance makes the dramatic story easy to understand by adapting the narrative into an opera.The narrator is often a man, but in this performance, the famous Swiss actress Zuny Meles is in charge.
