Anton Rubinshtein, a Russian composer of great renown as a pianist, wrote numerous piano works, including symphonies, operas, and concertos, and made a name for himself throughout the world as a popular composer. This album contains "Six Preludes and Fugues" composed in 1857 and "Three Pieces" from 1867. Each of the preludes and fugues is dedicated to a famous player or composer of the time, and their character is hinted at in the music. The fugue, guided by a lyrical prelude, uses strict counterpoint, but is also romantic, with a scattering of singing melodies. The "Three Pieces" is salon-style music. The exercise entitled "On the Wrong Note" is an interesting piece with a sound reminiscent of a misstitch. Martin Kazun is a pianist who was highly acclaimed for his work on Rubinshtein's "Six Preludes and Exercises" (8.574426). On this album, he plays technical passages and sings Rubinshtein's beautiful melodies. Naxos Japan
