Havergal Bryan (1876-1972) (real name William) was a self-taught musician and organist at a small church, and before the age of 20 he was exposed to Elgar's choral works and became an avid supporter of new music of the day. When he first began composing, it seemed that he would have a smooth sailing life as a composer, as his works were well received by many audiences, but he dropped out for various reasons. Although he wrote 32 symphonies during his lifetime, his works were largely forgotten, and even today, his great achievements are only known by a few enthusiastic fans. This album contains two symphonies, his favorite "Dr. Mary Hart" (written in the form of variations), and the magnificent "For Courage. This is sure to make you even more of a fan. Naxos Japan
