To show off his own superb technique, Liszt (1811-1886) transformed the works of many composers of his time into brilliant piano pieces by himself. The "Italian Nocturne" with the Mercadante motif was composed in 1838, and it is said that Liszt's performance of this piece enhanced the reputation of Mercadante's opera "Oath," which was premiered at the time. Mercadante was certainly the best opera composer until the rise of Verdi's works in the 1840s. The Paganini Grande Exercises, which include the famous "La Campanella" in the collection, are laced with sparkling virtuosity (the CD is labeled S140). (The CD is labeled S140, but this is actually a performance of the revised version of S141. ) The CD also includes works on themes by Rossini and Spontini.
