Description:
Gloria Coates (1938–), an American composer best known for her symphonies. Her style is uniquely distinctive; the ascending glissandos (sliding movements of sound) that appear throughout, interspersed with occasional familiar melodies, brush past the ear like a nightmare. Of course, the string quartet included here is no exception; the bird-like sound of the violin, which colors the arpeggiated chords repeated by the lower strings, is something you’ll never forget once you’ve heard it. In contrast, the “Violin Sonata” is an austere piece with a somewhat classical air. Its solitary resonance, as if challenging the limits of the strings, is simply irresistible. The “Piano Trio,” titled after a line from a poem by Emily Dickinson, is—as the title suggests—a lyrical piece. That said, it’s typical of her style to casually weave quarter-tones into the beautiful sound. Please savor the slightly out-of-tune resonance of the string instruments.
