This is the third volume in the Early Years Recordings series, which unravels Jaco Pastorius' pre-debut years. While the first two volumes of the series documented Jaco's R&B-oriented performances, this volume features Jaco's completely jazz approach: in 1972, after his time with Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders, he refined his phenomenal bass technique and at the same time took a leap forward in his musicality. Recorded here in 1973 with the Ira Sullivan Quintet. Miles going electric, Chick's Return to Forever, McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report, formed by Zawinul and Shorter. This laconic account of the jazz scene in the early 1970s, which ushered in a new era, rivals those in jazz history. The band consists of Ira Sullivan as leader, Joe Diorio, Pat Metheny's mentor from Berklee, on guitar, Alex Darki, Hancock's protégé, on keyboards, and Jaco, with his threatening technique.The overwhelming "Barry De Nina" is an epic and storytelling performance that is ultra-progressive and includes the earliest recordings of "Las Olas". The world of this performance also offers a great peek into the awareness of Weather Report at that time! A year later, in 1974, Jaco would record a demo tape of "Contenuum" for Joe Zawinul, and I feel it is safe to say that this Ira Sullivan track is the musical starting point of that tape.
