Description:
The Balwinski Duo was formed in 2012 by musicians from Poland and Ukraine, both of which are neighbors of Russia. The duo takes its name from a Ukrainian composer whose scores were all burned during the Stalin era and who was subsequently exiled to Siberia. Upon returning from his decade-long exile, Balwinski rewritten his major works from memory, which is why they can still be performed today. For this duo, the name symbolizes an indomitable spirit. The suite that opens this album consists of two “songs,” a lively humoresque, and a dance—four movements totaling approximately 23 minutes in playing time. The final track, “The Dead Butterfly,” was composed by the Polish musician Braiza, inspired by a scene he witnessed in 2022. It depicts a scene from a memorial service held on June 4 of that year at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv to commemorate the children who fell victim to the Russian invasion, where parents who had lost their children hung prayer bells from the branches of an apple tree. It is a simple yet reverent little piece that blends Ukrainian-style melodies with sounds reminiscent of bells and church chimes. Together with the works by famous composers interspersed throughout, this album evokes “various forms of communication” and is imbued with the hope that listeners can safely enjoy performing and listening to it.
