[A Wonderful Project by Spain’s Early Music Community to Mark the 800th Anniversary of a Saint’s Death] Saint Francis (c. 1181–1226), a monk born in Assisi in central Italy who devoted the latter half of his life to a life of poverty and devotion and was later venerated as a saint, will mark the 800th anniversary of his death in 2026. His life has served as the subject of numerous paintings since the Renaissance, and later composers, including Liszt and Messiaen, have dedicated many works to this saint. However, it is not widely known that in his youth, he loved the culture of the regions north of the Alps and, influenced by the troubadours (court poets) and jongleurs (acrobats, jesters, and musicians) who were migrating in large numbers from southern France to Italy at the time who were migrating from southern France to Italy at the time. It is not widely known that he cherished music until the end of his life. This album is an excellent project that sheds light on St. Francis’s own musical life. Based in Valencia in central-eastern Spain, the Capella de Ministrels, accompanied by a vocal ensemble and various medieval instruments, highlights the music of 13th-century central Italy. The core of the program consists of psalm songs attributed to Julianus, a German monk who received St. Francis’s teachings, and a collection of laudi (religious songs in Italian sung by laypeople) that were already gaining popularity at the time, predating their widespread popularity in the 15th century. As is customary for this label, the booklet notes (in Valencian, Spanish, and English) are also comprehensive. Please enjoy an auditory experience that transcends 800 years of history through the unique melodies of these songs, accompanied by the distinctive resonance of medieval instruments crafted from natural materials.
