Description:

A live recording of Bruckner's religious works by Elas-Casado is now available. From Monteverdi to Wagner's "Ring" and Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" to Eötvösz, Elas-Cassado's thorough understanding of the score and lyrics, as well as his superb conducting skills, make his interpretations even more profound. He is one of the most highly anticipated conductors, both in concert and on recordings. In the Bruckner Year 2024, he made headlines with his Symphony No. 4 "Romantic" with the Anima Eterna, an ancient instrumental ensemble, and here he conducts the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra in two large-scale religious works. Bruckner is nowadays most often associated with symphonic works, but he was initially noted as an excellent organist, especially for his improvisations, and as a composer, his highly acclaimed masses paved the way for the creation of symphonic works. The Te Deum is a mature work, with motifs reminiscent of the second movement of his earlier Symphony No. 7. It is an approachable work for symphony fans. Mass No. 3 is the last in a series of mass compositions, and was composed after Symphony No. 1. It is a milestone in the transition from religious works to symphonic works. Elas-Cassado toured Germany in 2024 with the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra in a program of Bruckner's Symphony No. 6 and Te Deum. The Te Deum on this album was performed in Stuttgart, the orchestra's home base, where the tour began. Mass No. 3 was also performed live at the same venue in March 2025. Elas-Cassado's music-making is clear and uncluttered, both orchestral and choral, and the chorus-driven balance of the recording results in a precise and magnificent performance. Naxos Japan
