New York Polyphony

Description:

[The New York Polyphony, one of the finest male voice ensembles of our time, sings "Sky of my Heart." The works on this album were selected from over 400 years of musical history and reflect their deep passion for the discovery and development of the ancient music repertoire. Many of the works performed deal with themes such as "life," "death," and "the afterlife," with one work by Andrew Smith reflecting a personal experience of bereavement and another by Paul Moravec reflecting the effects of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus infection. The compositions by William Byrd, Ivan Moody, John Tavener, and Becky McGlade have a religious depth, and "Six Japanese Poems of the Moon by Saigyo" by Akemi Naito, whose poem in the piece is also the title of the album, is a meditative sounding piece based on a waka poem by Saigyo Hoshi. The piece is based on a poem by Saigyo Hōshi. Nico Murie's "My Days" is a tribute to the early 17th century English composer Orlando Gibbons, and concludes the album quietly with Gibbons' own masterpiece, "The Silver Swan. Many of these contemporary works were commissioned by the New York Polyphony and are deeply rooted in the rich tradition of liturgical chant, yet are given new resonance through contemporary harmonies. In addition, the viol ensemble Restrange Viols participates in three of the pieces, adding rich color to this world of sound. New York Polyphony was formed in 2006 by Jeffrey Williams, Stephen Caldicott Wilson, Christopher Dylan Herbert, and Craig Phillips; in 2020 the tenor was replaced by Andrew Hooks, but the other three For nearly two decades, the ensemble has focused its repertoire on neglected Renaissance and medieval works, and has been active in premiering new works by contemporary composers. The ensemble has made numerous recordings, two of which were nominated for Grammy Awards, and its 2021 release "And the Sun Lost Its Light: Music for the Passion Passion" (BISSA2277) was highly acclaimed by music magazines worldwide. Released on SACD hybrid disc. Naxos Japan
