Born four years earlier than Bartók, Dohnányi was also an excellent pianist. Although his works incorporate elements of Hungarian folk music, they are not as folkloric as Bartók's works, and are more in the style of German Romanticism, similar to Brahms' music. Richard Strauss's Violin Sonata is a 23-year-old work. It is a piece that requires a high level of playing technique as well as a spectacular performance effect. The performance was led by Hamburg-born violinist Helen Weiss. Weiss began her career at an early age, performing with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15 and winning first prize at the Concertino Praga, a competition for young musicians, a year later. He has performed with leading orchestras such as the Elbphilharmonie and the Berlin Philharmonie, and has also participated in chamber music. Paul Rivinius was born in 1970 and has studied piano since the age of five. He has been a member of the German Federal Jugend Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and is an award-winning chamber music trio. He is a member of the Mozart Piano Quartet.Serenade features NAXOS favorites Gabriel Schwabe and viola player Tseng Wenxiao, who was born in Shanghai in 1981. They play in an intimate performance.
