Description:

The relationship between the son generation of the great Bach and the gamba and keyboard is reexamined from the sound of the instruments. Guido Balestracci is a viola da gamba player from Italy. In recent years, he has attracted attention for his recordings of Haydn's works using the baritone, a string instrument with many resonant strings, and Schubert's sonatas on the arpeggione, a rare instrument designated by the composer, as well as for his recordings of post-classical works. This time, we will focus on two important sons of the great Bach, who were active in the mid-18th century. The court of King Friedrich the Great, where the second son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach served for a long time, and London, where the youngest son Johann Christian Bach was active, both had in common exceptional 18th century gamba players and music lovers who were highly interested in keyboard instruments, including the latest invention, the piano. Both composers wrote duet sonatas for these two instruments. The combination of carefully chosen instruments in front of the forgotten gamba and the newest piano further enhances the significance of this masterful interpretation that brings out the full depth of the sound world spun by Emanuel, the standard-bearer of the polysensorialism, and Christian, the leading figure of the Gallant style. The keyboard uses a square piano, which predates the grand piano type, and a harpsichord, a model made in the Classical period. In particular, there are rare examples of recordings made with the original 1786 Broadwood instrument, which has a crisp, beautiful sound that can be heard on the harpsichord. This is a piece that makes us deeply realize once again how the generation that prepared for Mozart's appearance enjoyed a precious and fascinating sound world. Naxos Japan
