Handel (1685-1759)
Description:
Controversial at the time of its premiere, this important work from Handel's late period is now being performed by the current Alarcon and an outstanding ensemble of performers! Semele" is no exception. When "Semele" was first performed as an oratorio in 1744 in concert form without stage sets or costumes, it was a puzzling work that was not part of the standard repertoire. However, its true value has been greatly reevaluated since the 20th century, partly due to the excellence of its numerous arias, and there have been a relatively large number of recordings of the complete work. Now, a new recording of the complete works from Belgium, a major center of ancient music, has appeared that cannot be overlooked! The project is conducted by Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, a talented Argentinean conductor who is highly acclaimed for his passionate performances. The singers include Ana Maria Rabin, an up-and-coming Romanian singer who has shown an aptitude for modern operettas, especially those in the ancient repertoire; Matthew Newlin, who has been active in opera houses throughout Europe; Chiara Skellato, who has been making her mark in recent years with a wide repertoire ranging from baroque to modern music; and Lawrence Zazzo, a countertenor with an outstanding affinity for Handel's works. The instrumentalists include concertmaster and soloist Shushanu Shiranosyan, veteran contrabassist Eric Matote, and timpani player Anima Eterna Eterna, who is active in a wide range of music from ancient to contemporary music. The timpani is played by Kuhn Pratink (......), a master of the Anima Eterna Brücke, who has been active in a wide range of fields from ancient to contemporary music. The singers' true interpretations of the ancient instruments, from the bassoon and plucked strings to the brass, are effectively heard in the vivid drama of the performance. This is a long-awaited recording of Handel's music, which is a true testament to Alarcon's reputation. Naxos Japan
