Description:
The brilliant young French conductor Valentin Tournet, born in 1996, has been at the forefront of the French classical music scene since his dramatic rise to prominence in the latter half of the 2010s. After studying the gamba under the tutelage of Pierrot, Cowan, and Savard, he switched to conducting, and under the tutelage of Pierre Cao and Philippe Herreweghe, his performances with La Chapelle Armonique, which he formed in 2017 while still a student at the Paris Conservatory, were met with rave reviews. He made his CD debut on the Chateau de Versailles label with the premiere version of Bach's Magnificat. After wowing the world with his interpretations of competing Bach works, including his subsequent work on the "John Passion," he now turns to his countryman Rameau. The recording of "Les Paradins," one of the most important works of his later years, was made at the Palace of Versailles with famous singers, and presents a sound world colored by dynamism and deep lyricism.Although its premiere in 1760 was a failure, this ambitious work from Rameau's later years is unique in its orchestration, with horns and musette (bellows-style bagpipes) creating a distinctive effect, and the music of this medieval love story involving fairies and knights is full of ups and downs. The solo parts are vividly sung by some of the best singers of the 21st century, such as Piau and Vidal, who are also active in their own solo albums, and Gillet, who is at the top of his game. The chorus and orchestra, which skillfully captures Rameau's complex harmony and creates a dramatic development, are a superb uniting force, The more you listen, the more you are drawn into this masterful performance. This new recording fully conveys the reliability of La Chapelle Armonique, the spirited group that followed in the footsteps of Pygmalion, and we hope you will enjoy the true value of this unique work that puzzled the people of Paris at the dawn of the classical era.
