A newly reconstructed version of "The Beggar's Opera," directed by Carsen with music by Christie, a ballad opera by John Gay and Johann Cliftoff Pepusch. The score from those days has not survived in its entirety, so various restored and reconstructed versions exist, but this new production by opera genius Robert Carsen, which premiered at the Théâtre Boeuf du Nord in Paris in 2018, is a quirky production in which the stage is replaced by a modern setting, with a pile of cardboard boxes arranged like building blocks. The stage is set in the present day, with a pile of cardboard boxes arranged like building blocks to form a stage set. The play is a scathing satire that exposes the hypocrisy of the times and the society in which it exists. The characters include a womanizer and a handsome wanted man, MacHeath, as well as the low-lifes, prostitutes, and corrupt police officers who inhabit the lower classes of London. With the exception of a few opera singers, the cast is made up of actors active in the world of musicals, and their casual singing and acting in this production, which mixes popular and artistic music, has the thrilling effect of revealing the fact that the customs of the time are still prevalent in the present day. William Christie, a great authority on ancient music performance, who was in charge of the musical reconstruction, comes on stage with members of Les Arts Florissants, and the sight of him playing surrounded by cardboard boxes is also hilarious.
