Robert Smith, viola da gamba player, was born in England and lives in Amsterdam. He studied Baroque cello with Walter Muller, Jaap ter Linden, and Viola da Hogue at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and viola da gamba with Mineke van der Velden and Paolo Pandolfo. He has participated in many distinguished ensembles such as the "Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra" led by Koopman and the "Insula Orchestra" founded by Ekilbey, and has actively released CDs on the international scene. In this album, she performs a suite by Marin Marais, a representative of the French Baroque period. As an accomplished gamba player himself, Marais demanded a wide variety of technique and tone in this collection, and Smith responded with a superb performance. The intimate ensemble with his co-starring players brings to life the world of the French court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Naxos Japan
