Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) should have made a wonderful contribution to the development of French Romantic music, but for some reason he is not well appreciated today. But did you know that his piano music is full of "French spirit"? In particular, these three sets of exercises are full of sparkling delicacy and great virtuosity, and are of interest in many ways, both to performers and to listeners. In particular, the spectacular virtuosity and beautiful melody of No. 6, "Waltz Exercise," Op. 52, have such power and effect that it can hardly be called "salon-style music. The pianist is Jeffrey Burleson. Active mainly in North America, he also excels at jazz, and in this Saint-Saëns, too, he gives a unique performance that evokes a distinctive pause. Naxos Japan
