Description:
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Georges Sifra (1921-1994) was known to have demonstrated his talent as a "showman" at an early age, improvising in circuses and taverns at the age of five. He then entered the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where he studied under Erne Dohnányi, dramatically improving his abilities as a pianist. However, his attempt to escape from Hungary, which was then under the influence of the Soviet Union, unfortunately failed, and he was sentenced to imprisonment for three years from 1950. He was subjected to severe torture and other rather harrowing experiences during this time, but upon his release, he began recording for the Qualiton and Supraphon labels. This was a stepping stone to a successful career in Western Europe, and he was able to escape to Vienna during the "Hungarian uprising" in October 1956, where he achieved outstanding success.He then toured from Western Europe to Paris, London, and New York before finally settling in France, where he made a name for himself. His playing is surprisingly exuberant, and his virtuosity, especially in Liszt's works, is still unmatched, even if some might call it "unmusical. But there is also a surprising introspection in Grieg's concertos, and the spicy Lully and Scarlatti pieces reveal a side of him that is not well known. All are commercial first-run recordings.
