Warren has always used bold language in her lyrics, from "Nae-Nae and Ruthie," a blues-tinged retelling of an Old Testament story, to "I Hope He Comes Back," an honest look at trusting and doubting your loved ones, to "Red Clay," a story about the painful history of the black community. always uses bold language to challenge listeners.She has always been outspoken about violence, injustice, insecurity, and the individual rights that everyone deserves. For this release, Warren teamed up with longtime friend and Grammy Award-winning producer Ben Kane, who has worked with D'Angelo and Emily King, to create the sound that Warren believes should be brought to life. She deftly navigates a sound reminiscent of Nina Simone and Pharoah Sanders - gospel, early R&B, and the alluring hues of the blues - to create a sound that is at times provocative, at times soft, and at times ever deepening. This album was recorded in a historic studio that has been in existence since the 1970s in Virtanuse, a small town on the outskirts of Paris.
