NONO's creative history has been divided by researchers into approximately three periods, with operas composed in each period. The second period was "Toward the Great Sun Full of Love" (1972-75), the third was "Prometeo" (1984), and this "Intoleranza" (Intolerance) 1960 was written in the first period. The script, which is filled with quotations from Brecht, Éluard, Mayakovsky, and others, creates a multi-dimensional space in which several different stories unfold and an elaborate staging makes full use of the multi-screen system. Since its premiere, this modern opera has been fortunate enough to be performed on many occasions, and although a Kontarsky disc has been released, fans will appreciate the appearance of this disc recorded in 2001. Gabriel Feltz, whose Mahler series has been well received, also gives a fine performance. Tobu Land System
