The Schumann series by Holliger and the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne is finally complete! The sixth volume of the ongoing series of recordings of Schumann's symphonies, concertos, and overtures by the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne, conducted by Holliger, on the Audite label in Germany, is now complete. The sixth and final recording in the series features the late overtures and the Zwickau Symphony. It is a great pleasure to hear Holiger's careful interpretation of the complete works on this recording. Zwickau is Schumann's birthplace. This symphony was composed between 1832 and 1833, with the second movement completed but not the last movement. The first movement of this recording is based on the Leipzig manuscript.This series by Holliger & WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne includes Vol. 1 [Symphonies Nos. 1 "Spring" and 4 (1841 version), Overture, Scherzo and Finale (AU97677)], Vol. 2 [Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 "Rhine" (AU97678)], Vol. 3 [Cello Concerto, Symphony No. 4 (1851 revised version) ( AU97679)], Vol. 4 [Violin Concerto, Piano Concerto (AU97717)], and Vol. 5 [Concerto for Orchestra with Solo Instrument (AU97718)] have all been released to favorable reviews.
