The enigmatic composer Giacinto Scelsi (1905–1988). An Italian composer influenced by Eastern mysticism, he adopted a compositional style in which he would record improvisations performed while in a trance-like state and then have others transcribe the recordings into musical notation; as a result, he was regarded as a maverick throughout his life. Filled with magical charm, the motifs and rhythms that build up improvisationally create a truly mysterious world—at times reminiscent of minimal music, and at other times evoking the illusion of being alone in a vast cave or temple. He is one of those composers with a devoted following. This release features Scherzi’s piano works. Suite No. 9 is titled “Ttai,” which is the 11th symbol (in Italian notation) from the Chinese Book of Changes and means “peace.” In the preface to the published score, Sherchi wrote, “This work must be listened to and performed with great inner calm. Nervous people, please stay away!” In recent years, this work has been rediscovered as meditation music. Suite No. 10, “Ka,” has various meanings (such as “element,” or in Sanskrit, “who?” or “what?”).
