Formed in Glasgow in 1969, Stone the Crows were honing their craft in Scottish pubs, and had it all: not one but two spirited singers, a talented guitarist, a rhythm section that had played with John Mayall, and Led Zeppelin manager As these fine recordings from 1969 to 1972 attest, Stone the Crows are a crunchy live band, especially lead singer Maggie Bell! A multiple winner of Britain's Top Female Singer award, Bell has a raspy gutbucket voice and is that rare singer who, while not quite in the naked emotion and range of Janis Joplin, was closer to her style than any other female singer.The four CD set, featuring studio sessions and concert performances with John Peel, Bob Harris, Mike Harding, and others, captures the Crows' meteoric rise in the blues-rock world. It includes songs from the original lineup, led by guitarist/songwriter Leslie Harvey, to the later lineup, led by a young Jimmy McCulloch on guitar, as well as live versions of songs often played live! Disc 4 adds eight additional songs recorded in 1970 with the help of Ashley Wood. Also included is a photo booklet with commentary by CHRIS WELCH of REPERTOIRE and an interview with Maggie Bell.
