Lalo (1823-1892)

Description:

Lalo's visionary piano quintet finally sees the light of day. This is a fine album of Edouard Lalo's works for strings and piano. Lalo is best known for his "Spanish Symphony," but he himself played the violin and left behind some effective works for this instrument. The Piano Trio No. 1 and the Violin Sonata have been recorded and relatively well documented, but the unpublished Piano Quintet is a world premiere recording, a 16-minute work in two movements that was probably composed around 1862. It is so rich in content that it can be described as Beethovenian symphonic, and Lalo's ambition can be felt in the elaborate counterpoint writing of the second movement. This is a "hidden gem" that will thrill piano quintet fans. The performance is by young French musicians. Their fresh and youthful musicality is perfectly suited to Lalo's music, which is full of life. This is an album that gives us hope. King International
