Outstanding Sense of Balance and Narrative Tchaikovsky as Interpreted by Trio Karenin The Trio Karenina, who visited Japan for the 2025 La Folle Journée music festival and left a lasting impression on audiences with their exceptional ensemble playing, has released a new album featuring Tchaikovsky’s In Memory of a Great Artist. Named after Anna Karenina, the trio’s album is imbued with their deep passion for Russian music. Tchaikovsky’s In Memory of a Great Artist was composed in memory of Nikolai Rubinstein (1835–1881), who died at the age of 45, and marked Tchaikovsky’s first work for the trio of violin, cello, and piano. Until then, Tchaikovsky had resisted combining the three instruments—violin, cello, and piano—believing that doing so would dilute their individual characteristics. However, as he explored this “new, uncharted form,” he gradually came to find it deeply compelling. Nikolai Rubinstein was a pianist, composer, and conductor, and one of the leading figures in the Russian music world. It was Rubinstein who introduced Tchaikovsky to a professorship at the Moscow Conservatory. The trio was premiered in Moscow in March 1882, coinciding with the anniversary of Rubinstein’s death. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s (1844–1908) trio was composed in 1897. Immediately after its completion, Rimsky-Korsakov reportedly described the work as “still unfinished” and concluded that “chamber music is not my domain,” yet his distinctive style shines through in every detail, from the brilliant melodic lines to the special attention given to the solo parts. The “Andante appassionato,” included at the end of the CD, is based on an unpublished version of the slow movement from Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (completed in 1880, the year before the Piano Trio, and dedicated to Nikolai Rubinstein)—which was originally conceived as a triple concerto— arranged for piano trio by Jean-Claude Penetier, who is also the Trio Karenin’s mentor. While the movement is originally notable for its tender dialogue between the violin and cello, the arrangement assigns the piano both its original part and the role of the orchestra. This program fully showcases the Trio Kalenin’s charm, characterized by their exceptional sense of balance and a style of expression that is both bold and highly restrained. MIRARE
