Description:

Laura Lutens, a prodigious guitarist born in 1999 From “The Devil’s Trill” to Paganini’s Variations A rich blend of virtuosic technique and warm musicality A tone that makes you forget you’re listening to a guitar Prodigious guitarist Laura Lutens’ debut album on the Naïve label. Titled *Diabolico*, this album invites us into a world colored by mysterious tales of pacts with the devil and eerie phantoms. The CD opens with pieces that demand truly diabolical virtuosity: Tartini’s *Devil’s Trill* followed by variations on Paganini’s *Caprices*. While the *Caprice Variations* comprise a monumental work of 51 pieces, this recording features 11 selections that Luthens particularly loves to perform. Next, Nuccio D’Angelo’s (b. 1955) *Two Lydian Songs* brims with an almost ecstatic poetic sensibility, evoking an ancient, forgotten, yet undeniably magical world. The program concludes with Rodrigo’s (1901–1999) *Prayer and Dance*. Inspired by the flamenco tradition, this two-part work—in which *Prayer* serves as a heartfelt plea followed by *Dance*, which unfolds as a tragically intense torrent of rhythm—is a piece in which the guitar’s allure explodes. Throughout the program, Loutens quietly establishes her own style through a performance marked by intimacy, ease, and refinement, producing a sound that makes it seem as though the guitar has been transformed into a lyre. Laura Lütens is a German-Belgian classical guitarist born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1999. She began playing the guitar at age 8 and, at the young age of 14, enrolled at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich as the youngest student in the university’s history (in the junior class). She subsequently completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees with distinction and is currently pursuing the “Excellence in Performance” program, equivalent to a doctoral degree. At the age of 22, she joined the faculty at the same university. In 2022, she won first prize at the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition (Spain) and also received the award for the best interpretation of the set piece. He has received the Leonhard & Ida Wolf Memorial Music Award from the City of Munich, and is a talented artist with a track record and list of awards on par with that of a master, despite his young age. His performances are underpinned by a refined sense of tone, bold expressiveness, and technical mastery. With a repertoire that freely traverses different eras, he is considered one of the most promising young soloists in the classical guitar world today. NAIVE
