Queen of the Viola, Tabea Zimmermann Appearing in a superb ensemble with Ensemble Resonanz Tabea Zimmermann, the Queen of Viola, led Ensemble Raisonanz, the world's premier string ensemble, in a performance of works by Enescu and Britten, two composers for whom the violin (Enescu) and viola (Britten) had a special place in their hearts. The Ensemble Resonanz is a chamber orchestra based in Hamburg, Germany. The orchestra has no permanent conductor, but Riccardo Minaj has been appointed as the orchestra's permanent guest conductor. The ensemble also features some of the world's finest string players as guest conductors, including Jean-Gian Kellas, Isabelle Faust, and Tabea Zimmermann. Enescu's String Octet was written when he was 19 years old. It is a work that demands a wide range and virtuosity from all eight parts, led by the violin part, which he himself was a virtuoso player.This work shows Enescu's deep study of Brahms's works, his experience performing in front of Brahms, and his familiarity with Mendelssohn's Octet. Enescu himself has also suggested the possibility of performing the Octet with a string orchestra, with the melodic lines at the discretion of the conductor to be played by the soloist. Here, the Ensemble Resonanz string orchestra is led by the ensemble, with Zimmermann joining in the viola part. The piece is a work of high intensity, full of passion in each melody, and the ensemble led by Zimmermann gives a masterful performance with full energy and lyricism, but without a single millimeter of failure.
