The soloists are Isabelle Faust, the queen of violin, and Jean-Frédéric Nuebrugge, who has shown his talent as a professor at the Conservatoire from a young age, on piano. The conductor is Lhoto, whose unique talent and brilliance explode chemically in modern and contemporary works, and the orchestrator is the period instrument Les Siecle, making this the most thrilling Ligeti recording imaginable. Ligeti tends to emphasize the bizarre, but here the music is full of comical expressions, light ensemble playing, and heavenly transparency and beauty. The music is surprisingly rich and resonant. Kurtág's string quartet works are also included, and are also excellent performances. In the Violin Concerto, Faust's rich singing and flawless technique are the highlight. And the transformable tones of Les Siecle's elite players are at their best in response to Faust.The "strange" and almost unrealistic (sometimes warped) harmonies that Ligeti incorporates, the medieval hochetus to baroque suites, as well as elements of Caribbean, African, and East Asian music, resonate very musically and vividly.
