A Collection of Dance Concertos by Joel Fan Joel Fan is a technically gifted pianist who is popular in the United States. He has gained recognition as a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s “Silk Road Ensemble,” through performances at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and through appearances on nationally broadcast programs such as “Good Morning America” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” This collection brings together dance-themed works for piano and orchestra by seven composers: Pierné, Ricardo Castro Herrera, Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Weber, Gottschalk, and Charles Wakefield Cadman. Pierné was a composer one year younger than Debussy; while he has remained somewhat in Debussy’s shadow as a composer, he made significant contributions as a conductor by actively performing works by his contemporaries. Pierné’s *Fantasy-Ballet* for piano and orchestra was composed when he was around 21 years old, yet it displays a masterful sense of harmony, beautiful melodies, and sophisticated orchestration. Chopin’s *Krakowiak* incorporates melodies from the folk dances of the Kraków region of Poland. And Saint-Saëns’ “Wedding Cake,” composed for a friend’s wedding, is a beautiful piece featuring dazzling arpeggios and an elegant interplay between the orchestra and the piano.
