Description:
Meredith Monk, an American composer, vocalist, and performer who has been pursuing her own unique style, will release her new album, "Cellular Songs," on the ECM New Series. This is the 13th album by Monk, who has been active since the 1960s. It is the second in a multidisciplinary trilogy that began with her previous album, 2016's "On Behalf of Nature," which was created as a meditation on a globally endangered ecosystem. Titled "Song of the Cell," the album is Monk's most adventurous vocal music in the series, turning to the fundamental structure of life and inspired by the activities of the cell, including replication and mutation. With this work, she seeks to present a culture of cooperation rather than competition or destruction, based on the idea that "the cell is a kind of miraculous archetype of cooperation." She also describes her own creative process in spatial terms as follows. Before, my music was much more layered. Now you can even see and hear the work spinning around as if it were a sculpture in space.""Of the premiere in New York in March 2018, the New York Times wrote, "Monk spun the different elements together so fluidly that an obvious sense of hope was Monk has created a palpable sense of hope by weaving different elements together so fluidly. Witnessing a synthesis like the one created in Cellular Songs, it becomes much easier to imagine building bridges across social divides - or even pushing the crowd into individual people. The album was recorded at Power Station Studios in New York City in 2022 and 2024. As artists, we all face the question of what to do in times like these. I wanted to create a work that could be experienced as another possibility for human action. In it, the values of cooperation, mutual aid, and kindness are presented as a counterbalance to the values that are prevalent today."(Meredith Monk)Universal Music/IMS
